Learning to play the piano is a fascinating journey. Piano lessons are taught on my Bluthner grand piano in a dedicated music room at my home in Huddersfield near Halifax in West Yorkshire. The instrument was constructed in 1923 and was fully refurbished twenty years ago when I acquired it. It provides an ideal learning platform for all abilities.

There are many reasons for wanting to start playing the piano, the most important reason though has to be for your own enjoyment. Learning to play any instrument is a skill that will remain with you for the rest of your life. Much satisfaction and pleasure can be had from being able to sit down at any piano and play the music you want, whenever you want to play it.

Piano lessons are tailored to the individual, and will cover things such as posture, technique, reading music, musicianship and musical interpretation. Crucially, the learning process needs to be fun!

I often receive enquiries from adults that have either played the piano in the past, or those that have always wanted to play but feel apprehensive about starting. Generally the concern is 'am I too old?', or even 'I am too old!' This is simply not the case. Adult students often learn more quickly than children and are always very welcome!

As a fully qualified piano teacher I am able to offer graded exams for all ages if required, from the early Prep Test designed for the new player, right up to Grade 8 and beyond for the more experienced pianist. A choice of exam board is available, depending on what style of music appeals including the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music syllabus along with Rockschool. All the exam boards I use have full accreditation. Please note that exams are optional. I never pressurise students into taking exams if they do no wish to do so.

To compliment your journey into music you might also be interested to know that I also offer drum lessons in the Huddersfield, Halifax and Kirklees area. If you are more into the theory of music then why not read more about my music theory lessons.

Joy Gilbert

My eldest son expressed an interest in piano and we decided to take the consultation Ian offered. We were put at our ease immediately and after an informative chat we went ahead and booked lessons. My son is now really enjoying learning the piano and we've found his studies have helped him in school too with extra confidence. Many thanks!
